Garden sheds compared: timber and metal sheds with prices

A shed has one job: keep tools, bikes and the mower dry for twenty years. The small timber stores below suit a patio or the side of the house, the metal Ecostar sheds suit anyone who never wants to paint wood again.

Prices and ratings from Tuin.co.uk when we checked (October 2026), cheapest first. Delivery and base not included. Affiliate links, how that works. We have not built these ourselves.

What to look for

  • Measure the base first. A shed needs a level slab or timber base a little larger than its footprint.
  • Pressure treated timber skips the yearly stain. Dip treated timber needs one every year or two.
  • Thicker walls (16mm and up) hold shelves and hooks without bowing.
  • Metal sheds do not rot, but they sweat in winter. Add ventilation if you store tools.
  • Most sheds under 2.5m tall need no planning permission, but check if you live in a listed building or conservation area.
