Log cabins and garden rooms compared: sizes, wall thickness and prices

A log cabin is the step up from a summer house: thicker walls, proper doors and often double glazing, so you can use it as an office or studio all year. Add insulation and a heater and it works in January too.

Prices and ratings from Tuin.co.uk when we checked (October 2026), cheapest first. Delivery and base not included. Affiliate links, how that works. We have not built these ourselves.

What to look for

  • For year round use, pick 40mm walls or more and double glazing.
  • Plan the power supply early. An armoured cable from the house needs a qualified electrician.
  • Within 2m of a boundary, keep it under 2.5m tall to skip planning permission. Over 30m², or with a bed in it, building regulations apply too.
  • Cabins need a perfectly level base. A concrete slab or a plastic grid base both work.
  • Treat the timber inside and out in the first month, before the wood starts to move.
